News
and information regarding negotiations between the University of
Minnesota and the University Education Association-Crookston
Information
Update - August 11, 2005
Contract negotiations between the University of Minnesota and
the University Education Association began at 8:00 am on August
11th. Following introductions and a discussion of the negotiation
process, each negotiating team presented its opening proposal
along with a brief explanatory narrative.
Communications
were open and honest. As is normal, both teams started negotiations
with differing proposals and identified numerous items that will
require careful and thoughtful consideration. Throughout the day
both sides met jointly and separately to prepare and discuss specific
proposals. Alternating between face to face work at the bargaining
table and team caucusing, the negotiators worked diligently to
establish a framework for discussion. We appear to have developed
an effective strategy to work through the various proposals and
start substantive discussion on specific elements.
In summary,
we were pleased with the amount of progress made during the first
day. The UMC negotiating team is committed to this process and
to arriving at a result that will meet the unique needs of our
campus, our mission, and all of the people we serve.
